The ‘Missing’ List – The only countries in the world where I’ve been unable to locate a car rental option at present. Let me know if you’re aware of one in any of these 10 locations…
Afghanistan - I’m sure you could find someone who would offer an ‘unofficial’ rental but obviously at present it would be reckless to self drive and there are no companies offering car rental in the country.
Bermuda forbids visitors from driving so thats a non starter.
Burma – Some confusion on whether its legal for foreigners to drive but I was unable to locate a rental company
Bhutan - Its possible to rent a car in India and drive to Bhutan, but I couldn’t find a rental company in the country.
Iraq - My understanding is that there are car rental companies still operating at main airports but none seem to have a functioning website. Most visitors rent an armoured vehicle or car with a driver/guard from a security company and self drive would be reckless in the extreme.
Nepal – Sixt have an office but make you take a driver at present
North Korea- I’d be impressed if someone came up with a car rental company here!
Tajikistan – I struggled to find anyone offering self drive. Even travel companies seemed unable to help.
Turkmenistan – I’ve been told by an Ashgabat based travel agency that self drive is currently ‘forbidden’ in Turkmenistan. Not sure if thats official as with Bermuda or just that its frowned upon so no one does it.
Vietnam - Budget used to offer self drive from their Saigon outlet but now don’t seem to. I’ve never managed to locate a self drive option in the North. Getting a Vietnamese licence is a red tape nightmare too!
