Driving In Croatia
Croatia drives on the right and you can use the photo licence of any EU country to drive here.Drivers from other countries need their own licence plus an international driving permit. Speed limits range from 130kmh on motorways to 110kmh on dual carriageways and 90kmh on other roads and 50kmh in urban areas.It is illegal to drive with more than 0.05% of alcohol in the blood system.You must drive with dipped headlights from the last weekend in October until last weekend in March, even during the daytime. (Although I was stopped and fined for not having dipped headlights in June 2013- I’m not sure whether that was an error or whether the rule has changed since then) You must have also have winter tyres on your vehicle between 15 November and 15 April.
Croatia has a well developed and well maintained motorway system linking main urban areas. Most motorways are toll roads. Tolls can either be paid at toll gates on the motorway or via an ETC (electronic toll collection) device in vehicles. Check if your rental car has an ETC. The roads this can be used on are-

Driving abroad in Croatia generally feels more akin to driving in Western Europe than its Eastern neighbouring countries, main roads are usually in good condition, the standards of vehicle maintenance and driving are usually high and even cities and large towns feel manageable. Smaller roads may have deteriorated and are usually unlit and mountain roads can be affected by snow in winter. Staff at most rental companies will also speak good English.
Although I try and keep the information in the site updated as much as possible, in a rapidly moving world, situations can change daily. Croatia Self Driving Rules-
Cars will usually be able to cross international borders though there may be restrictions on taking certain high spec vehicles into Eastern Europe, particularly Albania. One way international rentals may be allowed for additional cost.
